When Should I Start Antenatal Classes

Congratulations on your pregnancy! This is an exciting and overwhelming time, filled with new information and important decisions. One of those decisions is when to enrol in antenatal classes. At Having a Baby Classes, we understand every pregnancy journey is unique. So, the ideal time to start classes can vary depending on your individual needs and preferences.

Second Trimester Sweet Spot (26-28 weeks)

Advantages:

  • You’ve likely passed the initial trimester’s fatigue and nausea.
  • You’re starting to feel your baby move, making the classes more relatable.
  • Plenty of time to absorb the information and practice techniques before birth.
  • Suitable for: Most expecting parents find this timeframe comfortable. There’s enough time to learn and prepare without feeling overwhelmed.
  • The 5 sessions on a weekday program would be suitable

Late Bloomer (30+ weeks):

Advantages:

  • Perfect for busy parents who prioritise other aspects of preparing for baby’s arrival.
  • Classes often focus on specific topics like Birth or Baby Intensive.
  • If you prefer an interactive session the 2 sessions on a weekend may be more suitable.
  • Parents with packed schedules or those who prefer a more targeted approach.

It’s never too late to benefit from antenatal classes

Even if your due date is approaching, a quick course on specific topics like breastfeeding or newborn care can be immensely helpful.

Look for classes with flexible options, such as weekend sessions or online components.

Consider your partner’s availability – ideally, both parents can attend the classes.
